March at The Magic Garden!

March is here, and despite the snow we’re feeling a spring in our step! Our March lineup features uplifting music from all round the world, and of course our Paddy’s Day celebration on March 17th!

Kicking off March it’s a rare unplugged performance from Balothizer, who are here to play you Post-Cretan melodies on Thursday the 1st. The world vibes stay going thanks to instrumental Afro-Latin-Carribean-funk-rock group 7Suns, who perform on the 2nd with support from Afrofunk group Olubundi. We’re also particularly excited about a gig from the incredible DOJO, a collective of jazz and reggae musicians from London, Paris, Nigeria, and Lebanon, on March 10th.

Onto St Patrick’s Day – we’ve been planning an extra special party for quite some time with the wonderful Monster Ceilidh Band, known for fusing together folk & D’n’B to create what they term ‘Electrofolkmageddon’!!!! They’re heading up a lineup featuring the bagpipe toting Sesh Grenade, and Elliott Rush, who they’ll join onstage for favourite songs by artists like the Chieftains, Christy Moore, Thin Lizzy & The Saw Doctors. We’ll be kicking off proceedings from 7pm with one man show Roddy McDevitt, who you may know from the infamous Irish Piano Bar at Glastonbury festival. We’ll have music till 2am thanks to Bazza Ranks of Irish Moss Records on the decks.

Have a look on our website for a full outline of our events, which include a Balkan extravaganza with the Underscore Orkestra & RAKA on the 23rd, and Afrobeat fusion from Burkina Faso on the 30th with Boubacar Kafando & Zaama Nooma Band. Plenty of great free gigs too from artists like Whiskey Moon Face (on the 4th), Megs Emrys (8th) and Joe Strouzer (25th).

And finally, don’t forget that Mother’s Day is Sunday March 11th! Make sure your mum knows you care by treating her to a roast dinner at the Magic Garden – we’ll even throw in a free glass of prosecco for her! You can make a booking by calling us on 0207 622 4844.

We look forward to seeing you here at The Magic Garden!

February at The Magic Garden!

We’re very happy to announce that not only has January finally come to a close, but we also have some stellar bands to bring that spring back into your step!

Back by popular demand, Captain Accident & The Disasters return to the stage on the 10th February with some upbeat & soulful rock, roots reggae, ska, dub AND rocksteady.

The following weekend we have a double whammy with a Batov Records takeover on the 16th February, bringing The Discount Orchestra who dance between genres, telling tales of love, loss, and post-apocalyptic survival, as well as Tamuna – traveling over from Sicily to play especially for us! Plus, Gypsy Hill’s very own DJ Kobayashi will be gracing the decks.

KISS KISS BANG BANG then take the reins on Saturday the 17th, hosting a night bursting with syncopated beats by The Cracked, DJ Hiphoppapotamus and Dan de’Lion. As they say themselves, “Swing, latin, samba and remix selectas all fused with a dollop of bass”. Yum.

8 piece reggae superstars Backbeat Soundsystem return on Saturday the 24th after an incredible show here last year. With influences gathered from across the music spectrum, they bring lush harmonies, a flawless horn section and a showstopping performance every time. Definitely not a band to be missed!

Last but by no means least, our Bluegrass Sessions are back on Wednesday the 28th after a very successful first night. Hosted by Lunch Special, it’ll be a good ol’ knees up and well worth getting involved in.  If there’s a special occasion lined up for you or your loved ones this month, why not celebrate with us? You can book a table via our website here.

We look forward to seeing you here at The Magic Garden!

January at The Magic Garden!

We’re starting the year as we mean to go on here at The Magic Garden, with a cracking month of gigs lined up. If the festive season has left your wallet frighteningly light then why not check out our completely FREE gigs from SundayThursday. There’s no need to sit at home dramatically staring out of the window! We’d highly recommend coming down to support the launch of our monthly Bluegrass Session, kicking off on January 10th.

We’ll bring you back into the swing of things with Larry’s Lounge on Saturday the 13th kicking off from 6pm until 2am. A mega line up including Buddha Triangle, DJM, Jimmy and The Riddles plus many many more. (We’re not kidding… there’s at least 8 acts playing!)

On Friday the 19th we are excited to have internationally acclaimed classic Reggae masters FOWOKAN gracing our stage! Formed by Sam Kelly – drummer in legendary group Cymande – back in 2009, they have performed at The London Jazz Festival and BBC Soul Britannia All Stars Tour amongst other prestigious events. DJs Decks Ray Spex & Natty Campbell MC  will  be on hand to keep those limbs moving until the early hours.

Saturday the 20th brings some sunshine to the stage with funk & soul beats from Daytoner. They blew us away last year, so we’re excited to have them back! Support comes from upbeat 9 piece Clapping For Strangers plus Jon Bongly will grace the decks with his signature bouncy beats.

To top it all off, we’ve got Ronnie Scott’s regulars The Big Smoke Family bringing New Orleans Funk & Mardi Gras Groove here on Saturday 27th. Stick around for a DJ set from Sacha Dieu who will keep us busting our best moves with his variety of Jazz/RnB/Balkan Gypsy beats until 2am in morning.

We hope to see you in January for a hearty meal, a proper dance, or even just a cup of coffee! Remember, it’s super simple to book an area – just visit our website to reserve yourself a spot! Wishing you all the best for 2018, from all the staff at the Magic Garden Pub.

We aim to outdo ourselves this year, welcoming in 2018 with a totally immersive Wonka’s Chocolate Factory themed party! The fantastic lineup includes South East London’s Chainska Brassika – an exciting 8 piece playing the finest new school ska, as well as the amazing Pangaea Steel Band, who play calypso versions of your favourite tunes, plus a duo of festival DJs to keep those hips a’movin till 4am! Don’t forget to come in costume, be it Willy Wonka himself or a gang of Oompa Loompas, it’ll get you into the spirit of things.

This year we are also offering a £40 ticket for those of you who’d like to enjoy a Wonka themed 2 course meal with chocolate wine! General Entry is £20 as usual.

Halloween at The Magic Garden

Shaun…? Dawn…? Day…? Oh my!! DO NOT miss Halloween at The Magic Garden on Saturday 28th October. Join us for a terrifically terrifying evening with not one but a trio of themes to choose from – “Shaun of the Dawn of the Day the Dead”! Pay homage to classic zombie movies  Shaun of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead, or to the Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead!! And if that isn’t enough inspiration for you, you get a free shot for arriving in fancy dress and a prize will be awarded for the best costume.

You can also expect, as always, a jammed packed night of live music! We welcome Spanish rock powerhouses Los Labios and the sensational gypsy dance stylings of Barbarella’s Bang Bang, and let’s not forget the return of south London punks, Sleaze.

Entry is FREE before 7pm and £7 afterwards, please click here to secure a table booking. Delicious pub grub is available until 10pm.

Summer is coming…

It’s somehow already May! Where on earth is 2016 going?? As the sun is finally promising to show its face a little more in our garden, we can safely say that summer is swiftly approaching, despite the odd shower of rain (but it wouldn’t England without that now would it?)… Come rain or shine, we’re making sure that our famous outdoor space is still proving itself as the most inviting and comfiest in London.

To start off the month and get you into that summery mood, we’ve got a brand new monthly market happening in our garden on May 1st, all day long. Here you’ll find all sorts of home and hand made products sold by some wonderfully talented people – from headpieces to chutneys to homeware! Plus, the following weekend brings us more sunny activities with Saturday afternoon art talks and workshops, hosted by the local Happenings Collective.

We’ll also be bringing you more incredible live bands and DJs over the next few weeks before many of them hit the festival circuit. Kicking off the month is a monumental weekend with Eastern gypsy favourites Ushti Baba and The Odd Beats, plus a set from the legendary Rumpsteppers on Friday! Then, Saturday brings us some familiar faces from Mama Jerk And The Lady Fingers, Gypsy Hill and the Loki DJs for some seriously skankworthy sounds!

Starting things off as we mean to go on, we’ve got more brilliant bands lined up for the following weekends too. We’ll be welcoming big bands with different takes on brassy melodies, like SUPA & Da Kryptonites‘ hiphop vibes, Matuki‘s reggae and the Discount Orchestra‘s gypsy-circus sounds!

Plus we’ve, more weekday talent than you can shake a microphone at! With plenty more up-and-coming bands as well as those giving it a go at our Tuesday open mic night, we’re never short of something magical happening on our stage…

Meanwhile, click here to view our range of brand new Spring menus, and make sure to sample some of our exciting seasonal dishes – from Bloody Mary Mussels, to Artichoke Risotto, to Eton Mess!

News for March

Spring is just around the corner and we’re getting ready with more fantastic events to put a spring back in your step!
We’ve got some wonderful tricks up our sleeve this month – like our collaboration with the Lost Horizons crew to bring a wood-fired sauna (yes, you read that right!) to the garden on the 12th of March! Meanwhile, on the 19th, it’s our very own northern blues legend John Fairhurst‘s birthday – so we’re pulling out all the stops to make sure he has the most ridiculous night we could give him!

We’re also introducing regular Tuesday night Acoustic Sessions to our calendar, where anyone can rock up and show us what they’ve got, with nothing going through the speakers – just pure unplugged music. So join us armed with your instruments and singing voices any Tuesday from now onwards!

As many of our staff are proud Irishmen, and it’s St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th, we’re obviously planning a big old knees-up. Thursday the 17th brings us the Langan Band’s Dave Tunstall, then an even bigger celebration on the 18th with jump-up folk act Forest of Fools and trad folk band Three Dollar Shoe!

Also, don’t forget that the 6th of March is Mothers Day, so make sure to treat your mum like the queen she is and take her for a magical Sunday meal! We’ve put together a special Mothers Day menu with 2 courses for £20 or 3 for £23, plus you get a glass of bubbly thrown in too. What’s not to love? Check it out here.

Best roasts to cure your hangover!

We’d like to say a massive THANK YOU to Esquire for citing our Sunday roasts as the best in London when it comes to curing your hangover! All we can say is that we have tried and tested this theory and can definitely vouch for it…

Every Sunday, from 12 until 10pm, we serve hearty traditional British roast dinners – beef, lamb and pork are all on the menu, and of course served with all the trimmings!

We’re also very excited to be announcing that we will soon be unveiling a new menu here at the garden, which will offer a huge range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, of which will include the further addition of more Sunday hangover cures for anyone and everyone to tuck into!

If that wasn’t enough, we are also now taking bookings for Christmas, so you can make sure not to miss out on the ultimate roast of all roasts, and one of the most important meals of the year! Check it out here and get in touch if you’d like to pre-book a table for the festive season.

From Crumpets to Kangaroos and Beyond…

Magic Garden crew! Mid July and that heatwave is still kicking in! Here’s how you can enjoy the heat in our lush garden:

1. HAVE A CRUMPET! Rejoice in the favourite British treat of a proper crumpet. Our garden cafe team have stepped it up and released their epic menu, which involves magic crumpets, old school triangle toasties, boozy coffee, hangover smoothies and cakes… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg! It’s also worth mentioning that they go out of their way to cater for all diets – gluten free, veggie, vegan, dairy free are not a problem – they even have THREE different kinds of non dairy milk. Now that’s dedication! Pay them a visit in the garden, open every day and ready to welcome you with delicious toasted items and restorative beverages. Yes!

2. EAT SOME KANGAROO! If you love BBQs and interesting meats, then make sure and check out our Magic Garden BBQs which run every weekend from 4-9:30pm. Kangaroo, bison rib-eye and Wagyu beef are on the menu, as are halloumi skewers for any veggies. You could also treat yourself to half a Scottish lobster with minted new potatoes if you’re feeling fancy, and there’s the Magic Cheese Board too if you want something a little bit lighter.

3. BOOK IN ADVANCE! The garden is obviously very popular in the summer, and if you’d like to have your event here, please book well in advance to avoid disappointment. As always, bookings are free of charge and we have party packages such as canapes, buffets and so on that the lovely Keith would be happy to set you up with. Email us: mgbooking231@gmail.com

We’ve got a glorious selection of summery bands for you too, spanning everything from Afro roots, country and gypsy to hip hop & dance – have a look at the events page to see what’s on when in July, August, September and beyond. Looking forward to seeing you for a crumpet and a cuppa, or maybe some dancing and cocktails. Let the good times roll!
