The Scribes are a multi-award winning hip hop three piece based in the South West consisting of lyricist/producer Ill Literate, rapper Jonny Steele and beatbox maestro Lacey. The group’s unique talents have combined to make a trademark sound unlike any other, featuring a seamless blend of live instrumentation and sampling set against a block rocking backdrop of booming bass and boom bap breaks.

Known for critically acclaimed performances full of energy, beatboxing and off the cuff freestyling, The Scribes have become festival favourites across the UK, regularly gracing the stage at Glastonbury Festival, Wilderness Festival, Boomtown Fair, Urban In Ibiza, Shambala Festival, Bearded Theory, Leopallooza and many more.
The group’s extensive touring has seen them perform and collaborate with some of the biggest names in hip hop including Macklemore, Dizzee Rascal, Kelis, Lethal Bizzle, Example, De La Soul, Wu Tang Clan, Wiley, KRS One, Pharoahe Monch, Four Owls, Goldie, MF Doom, Sugarhill Gang and Chase and Status to name (drop) but a few.
The Scribes signed with US label Kamikazi Airlines, co-owned by Dizzy Dustin of legendary hip hop act Ugly Duckling and released “The Sky Is Falling” LP and “The Scribes Present Ill Literature” LP worldwide to critical acclaim, garnering the group a sponsorship deal with ethical clothing company THTC alongside artists such as Ed Sheeran and Foreign Beggars.
This was followed up with the release of both “A Story All About How” and the apocalyptic concept album “Mr Teatime & The End Of The World” on Reel Me Records, the latter being named winner of the UndergroundHH.com “Concept Album of The Year” award. During the covid lockdowns of 2020 The Scribes also released the limited 7” clear vinyl “Stir Crazy/Haunted House Party” on The Get Down Records.
The Scribes latest releases, the “Quill Equipped Villainy” LP and the “Totem Trilogy Part 1” EP have both been released on Quill Equipped Records. The releases feature an array of talent including Akil the MC from Jurassic 5, MC Duke, TrueMendous and Leon Rhymes from Too Many T’s, and have won the group further acclaim with lead singles/music videos Righteous and I’m Back receiving global recognition.
