The Great Malarkey / King Punch / DJ Scratchy at the Magic Garden
October 29, 2021 @ 8:00 pm - October 30, 2021 @ 2:00 am£5
Punk/Folk ensamble The Great Malarkey will be delighting the Magic Garden with a show that only they can provide! Joined by King Punch, plus, DJ Scratchy on the decks spinning the best in Rock and Roll, Gypsy, Ska, Punk ’til 2am!
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is The Great Malarkey.
Influenced by the likes of Tom Waits, The Pixies, The Pogues, Beirut, Nick Cave, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Manu Chao, The Dead Brothers and Toots and the Maytals (the latter of whom they supported with only their third gig), The Great Malarkey are riotous mix of musical styles and genres delivered in a “multicultural train of fast beats and trembling slams of punk-folk spirit”. Drawing on their experience of over six years of extensive touring, with shows at Bestival (UK), the London Olympics, Boomtown (UK), Colours of Ostrava (CZ), Tønder Festival (DK), to name but a few, and mainstream airplay in both the UK and Denmark, The Great Malarkey continue to delight audiences across the UK and Europe with their explosive, “balls to the wall”, high energy live shows. In February 2019, “Gimme Sugar” from “Doghouse” was chosen by Tom Robinson as BBC 6 Music recommends track of the week, getting played by day time DJs Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamaq and Mary-Anne Hobbs.
The Great Malarkey do not disappoint. They bring their whole heart (all eight of them!) to every song, every show, every album and anyone who wants to listen. No need to just take their word for it though, here’s what some other people think:
“‘Duck n Dive’ may be one of the most surprisingly brilliant songs to come across my desk in months.” A&R FACTORY (Single Review)
“A must-see live experience” – TOM ROBINSON, BBC 6 Music
Rambunctious and right on the edge of control… one of the freshest sounds I’ve picked up this year” – Music-news.com
King Punch are a lively 7-piece ska-punk band hailing from London, England. Known for their energetic live shows, they are equally at home smashing together a blend of ska, punk, hard rock and swing in crushed London clubs or up on big festival stages – either way, everyone’s going to be going home sweaty and happy.
There is a simple reason why SCRATCHY has toured with the best and it lies in his unique and impeccable skills as selectah and dj. Described as a “music shaman”, SCRATCHY has travelled far and wide on his journey as resident of Dingwalls Dancehall to the Gypsy Hotel, playing in concert alongside many of the finest of the past three decades of music, an impressive international array that includes Iggy Pop, Black Uhuru, the Cramps, Jah Wobble, Joe Ely, Jon Spencer’s Blues Explosion, Tony Joe White, Ska Cubano, Los de Abajo, the Urban Voodoo Machine, Gallon Drunk, Fanfare Ciocarlia, la Phaze, the Dead Brothers, the Ramones, Blondie and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, as well as touring the UK twice with Dr. Feelgood. In February 2007, SCRATCHY accompanied the Californian reggae band, Groundation around Europe, as their supporting sound system. Much of 2006 & 2007 found SCRATCHY on the road, in concert, with GOGOL BORDELLO, filling the familiar spot he did with the CLASH, three decades earlier.
