John E Vistic ‘Welcome Down the Night’ Album Launch + Quiet Quiet Band + John Fairhurst + Sacha Dieu
July 23, 2016 @ 9:00 pm - 11:30 pm£7 – £8
With a slew of larger-than-life projects under his belt —John E Vistic – is something of a Bristol household name. (Bristol Live)
John E Vistic is a singer multi-instrumentalist and internationally award winning songwriter. As well as his guitar and vocal duties with The John E Vistic Rock N Roll Soundsystem, Vistic is known for his work as Creative Director of The Russian Winter show (Old Vic) and his collaborations with other artists including Crippled Black Phoenix, Emily Breeze, Way Out West and General Midi.
The last John E Vistic album Modern Love was described as having ‘its roots in the halcyon days of albums when music had dynamic and you heard something different every time you listened, music that begged you to listen’ (Live Music Scene).
John E Vistic’s new album Welcome Down the Night is produced by Tristan Longworth (Jon Allen/The Third Degree). It is a beautifully crafted album of songs about ‘love, death and the landscape of the heart’. Recorded with a lush and sensitive dynamic utilising a wide range of instrumentation, the album features collaborations with a legendary range of artists including members of Primal Scream, Morcheeba, Jon Allen, the Marc Ford band and Rachel Stamp as well as Katey Brooks and the Vistic Rock N Roll Soundsystem. The first EP from the album, What Will Be (out on ITunes now) has been described as:
“…psychedelic country folk, laden with soul and thought provoking literary lyrics. Think Hozier and Johnny Cash meets The Doors with more than a dash of Jack White.” (Nurture Music)
As well as performing songs from the new album solo, Vistic has recently put together a new five piece incarnation of his band featuring Rob Norbury (Candy Darling) and Mike Crawford (Apache Dropout/The Various Sorrows) alongside longstanding Vistic Rock n Roll Soundsystem sidekicks, Guy Fowler (Bass) and Dan Clibery (Drums).
If you were told that a band containing a death metal bassist and classically trained violinist existed you’d be intrigued, right? Be intrigued no more. The ironically named Quiet Quiet Band are here.
They perform songs of love and death, and maybe there’s nothing revolutionary about that, but they also play songs about sea monsters and murder. You get where this is going don’t you? They’re a mixed bag, yes – but what a glorious multi-coloured bag.
With hints of Anthony Kiedis and one of the most stylish moustaches in music they glide through wonderful soundscapes of alternative Country, Folk and good old Rock ‘n’ Roll with slices of The Levellers thrown in for good measure.
A masterful musician and captivating songwriter, John Fairhurst is recognised as one of the most creative guitarists on the circuit. Referencing a diverse collection of world genres, expect an explosion of textures and influences, blending eastern melodies with jaw-dropping guitar dexterity. His solo sets truly are a lesson in the art of fingerpicking blues and acoustic folk.
“Truly exquisite.” – (The Guardian)
“Fairhurst is both a masterful musician and songwriter, who carefully intertwines music of varying ethnicities into one roaring whole…with a freshness that is breathtaking… Makes Seasick Steve’s three stringed blues sound like the two-dimensional ramblings of a penniless hobo.” – (Chris Gilliver – citylifers.co.uk)
“John Fairhurst is possibly the finest guitarist you will ever see…brilliant songwriting and a gravel-swilled belter of a voice.” – (BBC Manchester)
